Abstract

The new Rituale Romanum, published after the II. Vatican Council, formulated new theological and spiritual aspects for Catholics following the Roman Rite in its blessing liturgy prepared for the blessing of holy images or statues. These aspects are new to the extent that they significantly changed the structure and texts of the blessing rituals known/used until then, and to the extent that these ritual actions follow tradition, that held in 787 teaching of the II Universal Council of Nicaea on the veneration of the images of the Lord and the saints is being updated. This study revolves around the theologically rich and questionable liturgy of the blessing of images.
